How Your Beliefs Effect Your Life and Business.

Perception is everything. In your job, in your relationships, in your life. How you believe and perceive the world to be, is exactly how you’re going to see it reflected back to you. I’ll tell you a little bit about how your beliefs effect your life and business and use my business as a case study.

The back story

When I first started my party decorations business, I would do anything for anyone, at the lowest price possible. Why? Because everyone on Etsy does it and if you want to compete, you have to sell your stuff lower than anyone else, right? WRONG.

How Your Beliefs Effect Your Life & Business

It wasn’t too long before I got burnt out and took the best online course for your creative business, that taught me that I’m “worth more than free paint.” That’s what the course creator, Jennifer Allwood, likes to say. Soon after, I raised my prices on custom party decorations because I spend a lot of time and energy on those items, and I want to charge my worth.

How Your Beliefs Effect Your Life & Business

Many times, the reason we don’t raise our prices in our businesses, or ask for more money in our jobs is because of fear. We’re afraid we are not worth it. That no one will pay. Or that we’re going to scare people away.

The truth of the matter is, whatever you believe about yourself, is what will be reflected back to you in the world because your brain reflects your beliefs.

Your Brain Doesn't Align Your Beliefs to Fit Your Life, It Aligns Your Life to Fit Your Beliefs.

This is my favorite quote. What exactly does this quote mean? It means the things that you believe will show up everywhere, while you won’t notice other things that don’t align to those beliefs.

My struggle with my beliefs

To be completely transparent, I still struggle with my prices and the feeling of worthiness. On one hand, I know that my products are a perfect fit for my target audience. And they’ll pay good money to get beautiful custom party decorations that they can’t get anywhere else. On the other hand, I realize that there are people who are still going to sell things on Etsy for pennies, and the people who purchase those items would never purchase from my custom party menu. And that’s okay. I know that my perfect customer always finds me, and that I only want to work with my ideal customer.

But like I said, it’s still a back and forth battle in my head. And how does it show up? By people telling me that my stuff is too expensive, of course. Just recently, I got several inquiries in my Etsy shop about a few of my items. One of them is a custom favorites poster that I take a lot of time to make perfect for my customers. It is, however, more expensive than similar items on Etsy. When people contact me about it and express that they feel the price is high, I give them my justification with a smile and move along. The funny thing is, many times, these people ultimately buy the item they’re complaining about, because it is one of a kind ;).

How Your Beliefs Effect Your Life & Business: The lesson we can learn

Shift your beliefs.

Listen, I’m not mad at them. And this isn’t the work of the devil. It’s also not the work of God or The Universe testing me. It’s easy to think that it could be a test. A lesson to be learned. And while, it’s definitely a lesson, I know that I created it. Through my fears, worries, and doubts, and my feeling of unworthiness, I created it. “Your brain doesn’t align your beliefs to fit your life, it aligns your life to fit your beliefs.”

What is it that you’re believing in your life, that’s showing up? Did someone say something about how you shouldn’t get your hopes up about something working out for you? Did something happen that made you postpone your daydream? Before you get mad at them and before you give up, ask yourself if you were thinking those things? Did you doubt yourself, think that maybe it wasn’t possible for you? I’m going to guess yes. It’s something I’m working on, and I’m going to encourage you to do the same.

Here’s to positive thoughts about ourselves and believing that anything is possible, if we just believe.
