what is positive thinking really

If you’ve been following me for a little while now on Instagram, you know I’m all about #partydecorationsandpositivity. I believe positive thinking is crucial to getting what we want in our lives and avoiding what we don’t, because our thinking holds a crap load of power. Let’s talk about what positive thinking really means so that you can start to harness the true power of positive thinking.

People throw around this idea of creating a positive “mindset” all the time. So what does that really mean? Well, I believe it really has two components.

Let go of every thought that isn't pushing your mind in a positive direction.

Positive Thinking: Believing without seeing

One of the elements that I believe is a huge part of positive thinking is the spiritual side. This is the idea that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience down on earth. It’s the idea that there’s a bigger force at play. That it’s responsible for creating this amazing place that we get to play in everyday. It’s also the idea of faith and believing in something that we can’t see. But knowing it exists.

By believing in this higher power, it can be truly beneficial to this idea of positive thinking. That’s because we can start to relax into the idea that the universe has our back. That we don’t need to worry or fear. We can trust that we’re in the exact right place at the right time. We are learning the lessons we’re supposed to be learning.

In the book, A Perception of Reality, which I talked about in a blog about my list of books for the spiritually curious, it says, “Everything is right.” “There is no wrong in the Universe.” That means that all the things happening in the world, are happening for a reason. So there’s not need to get angry about all the things we think are going wrong. Now I’m sure this might spark some controversy, but if you simply trust that God or the Universe has it all figured out, you can relax and breathe easy. Right?

If you need a reminder, I’ve created this relaxing screensaver for your phone so you can be reminded every time you look at your phone that EVERYTHING IS RIGHT. Download the screensaver here.

Positive Thinking: Brain-based Conditioning

Did you know that 95% of our behaviors, thoughts, and values are unconscious? That means that we’re simply walking around every day doing and thinking practically the exact same thing every day. I know what you’re thinking. Nuh uh! I make decisions and think new thoughts on the daily! I know it can feel that way, but in actuality, you’re not as free thinking as you think.

Our brains have been conditioned throughout the years, to believe, value, and think of things in a certain light. This conditioning not only affects our priorities, focus and behavior. But it also greatly effects our ability to think differently and make serious changes in our lives. And this my friends, is what they call, a paradigm. That’s why the other part of positive thinking has to do with brain-based conditioning.

Ever notice when you look back on an past relationship, or your childhood and you remember the really bad moments? Or what about when someone made fun of you or made you feel lessor than? How many of those moments do you remember over the accomplishments in your life or a compliment someone gave you?

Our brains are trained to remember these types of memories because it’s trying to protect us. But, as you can imagine, this kind of protection doesn’t serve us in the way that we function today. That’s why we have to actually take the time to reprogram our brains. This will help us thrive in the body and world we live in now.

Marrying the two

Positive thinking becomes easier when we can combine these two elements. If we start to put trust in the fact that all is well (the spiritual side). While also taking a closer look at changing the way we process information (the brain-based side). We can then begin to think more positively and live a more happy and fulfilled life.
