Now I get it. I had the same mindset. When I started my first side hustle of selling party decorations on Etsy, my mother in law saw the success I was seeing with my business and asked if I was going to quit my full time job. I laughed, because my side hustle wasn’t even making 10 percent of what I made in my 9-5, very far from the 6-figure business I’d envisioned when I started.
And as I continued to grow my business the thought of reaching 6 figures was always in the back of my head. If I could JUST get to six figures, life would be amazing. It would be everything I would need.
But what I didn’t realize at the time was that there is SO much more to gain from a side hustle that hasn’t reached six figures yet. So I want to share them with you in case you think that making anything lower than six figures makes you a failure…you’re absolutely wrong.

The first thing you can gain from a business is the tax benefits. Now you’ve probably heard before that if you have a business you get tax write offs. If anything, this should be one of the TOP reasons why you start a side hustle. You can write off anything from meals, education, your home office, telephone and internet, travel expenses, and the list goes on. You can take advantage of these write offs EVEN if you aren’t at 6 figures yet. Of course I’m not giving you any legal advice, you’ll want to talk to a CPA for more details, but the average person doesn’t realize the kinds of benefits you can take just by opening your own business. So don’t worry that you’re not at 6 figures yet, you can still take advantage of this huge benefit!
Uncharted Personal Growth
The next thing that a side hustle making less than 6 figures can give you is the BIGGEST deep dive into personal development that you neer knew you needed. Whether you have body issues, money blocks, childhood trauma, worthiness issues, trust issues, relationship issues – all of these things are going to come up when you start your business. Now you might say, well that sounds scary. But the thing is, these things are problems in your everyday life as well, they’re just more obvious when you become a business owner because you can’t hide behind being just another cog in the wheel at a company. You have to stand all on your own and realize that the only person or thing holding you back is YOU. And as scary as it might sound to address all the issues and trauma you’re carrying inside, it’s also going to be extremely freeing because on the other side of that is everything you want. And do you need six figures to get there? Nope. But the good thing is that hopefully by the time you’ve reached 6 figures, you’ve blasted through a lot of it and the sky’s the limit from there.
How a Side Hustle Redefines your Relationship with Time
The next thing that a side hustle not making six figures yet will help you do is use your time more intentionally. So many people think that they don’t have enough time to start a side hustle, but then when you do start one and you’re obsessed with growing it to six figures, you realize pretty quickly that you were using a lot of your time poorly before you started. It turns out there are blocks of time throughout each of our days that we’re squandering scrolling social media or just completely wasting on god knows what. On your way to a six figure business, you start to realize how precious time really is and the thought behind what you do today can influence tomorrow. I think so many times we’re living for the right now. With social media we can get into the mentality of keeping up with the joneses (whoever they are). When you create a business you plan to grow, you realize that you’re planting seeds for a better tomorrow. If we reached 6 figures right off the bat, I wonder if we’d have that kind of mentality about time. The get-rich-quick schemes or the overnight millionaires will likely not understand or even appreciate what can come with dedicating your time to a business and the joy you can feel when you create the reality you want overtime.
Every Little Bit Counts: Why 6 Figures is Not the Goal in A Printables Business
And lastly, just because you haven’t hit the six-figure mark doesn’t mean any little amount of extra money per month wouldn’t help you, amiright?
