Why I Use Photoshop To Create and Sell Printables on Etsy
Lately I’ve been noticing that there’s a lot of course creators and bloggers talking about how they use free online tools To Create & Sell Printables on Etsy. At first glance, this seems like an excellent idea. Why not spend zero dollars on printables that you can make hundreds or even thousands of dollars on? The problem? The capabilities don’t stack up to what Adobe Photoshop can do. Sure, canva can do a whole lot. But for me, it’s just not enough.
So let me tell you about where in my printables business that Photoshop comes into handy.
Is Canva Easier Than Photoshop?
Let me get this out of the way. Is an online tool like Canva easier to learn than Adobe Photoshop? The answer is a resounding yes. If you’re just looking to do some low key easy designs, then Canva is definitely the place for you. However, at the end of the day, Photoshop is the more desirable program for professional designers, photographers, and illustrators.
And since I take my party decorations business on Etsy pretty seriously, I definitely fall into the professional designer category in this instance. For example, Canva didn’t seem to provide me with the capability to remove a background from a subject, integrate different patterns and designs into my text, write on a path, and a few other key items I really needed to accomplish when I was designing my printables for Etsy.
So while Adobe Photoshop wasn’t the easiest program to learn at first, I was able to be successful in taking my business completely digital with just basic knowledge of Adobe products by utilizing capabilities that just weren’t possible in Canva.
Why I Use Adobe Photoshop To Create My Etsy Listing Photos
One of my favorite things about Adobe Photoshop is when it comes to editing and creating my Etsy listing photos for my products.
While Canva can crop photos and do basic editing, it doesn’t retouch the photos, do detailed color editing, or allow you to do detailed editing that would allow you to use the same photo for multiple Etsy listings.
For example, take a look at the two photos below. The first photo is the original photo I took for a train birthday party, while the second photo is edited and changed for an entirely different theme. Having the ability to take one photo with my camera or iPhone, and then be able to use the same photo on multiple Etsy products is a good enough reason for me to use Adobe Photoshop for my Etsy listings.
The Cost of Adobe Photoshop for Designing Printables on Etsy
At this point, you’re probably wondering, what is the cost of Adobe Photoshop?
The cost of Adobe Photoshop is $9.99/month and they offer free trials. Let’s compare this to an online editor like Canva. In order to be comparable to Adobe, you’ll want to upgrade to Canva Pro, which is $12.99/month. Therefore, when you really compare the numbers, Canva is actually more money than Adobe Photoshop, with less capabilities.
That figure alone shocks most people who think that Canva is the easier and cheaper way to design.
Using Adobe Photoshop and Canva in Your Business
But here’s something you might not have expected! I actually use both Canva and Adobe Photoshop in my creative business! Yes, that means I pay for both programs! And it is totally worth it! Why? Because, while I love Photoshop for designing all my printables for Etsy and editing my Etsy listing photos. Canva brings a lot of other capabilities for other areas of my business, like utilizing their templates for social media posts, sharing templates with my virtual assistant, and creating reels and Pinterest pins with music – all things that would be a little more time consuming in Photoshop.
At the end of the day, it’s your business and you’ll have to decide what program is best for you and your business. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!
