Who Can Make and Sell Printables?
Selling printables on Etsy is hands down the best side hustle where you can use your creative skills to make passive income. Plus it has SUCH low barriers to entry, anyone can do it! People make money selling printables when they’re not creative, have never had any professional design experience, and have never sold anything before. Given all that, why wouldn’t you at least try to sell printables on Etsy to earn an extra income?
What does it cost to sell printables on Etsy?
You might be worried, however, about the startup costs of a business. Afterall, most businesses take a little bit of up front crash right?
Most businesses or side hustles seem to have a pretty steep startup cost. Take real estate for example, or starting your online boutique. Both of those would take a pretty hefty startup budget. But not printables!
How Much Does it Cost to Design Printables for Etsy
Let’s start with designing your printables. You could absolutely start with a free design program like Canva. And there are plenty of other free design software programs out there that people are using to sell printables on Etsy. However, that’s exactly the problem. With so many people using free programs, many printables look the same or just not as cute as they could be.
That’s why I recommend using Adobe software to design your printables. In fact, I teach all my students how to design printables using Adobe products in my printables program, The Abundant Girl’s Guide to Passive Income With Printables on Etsy.
So how much are Adobe products? I personally use and teach women to design using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Acrobat Standard. You can get Adobe Photoshop for as little as $9.99/month (at the time of writing this, of course!). And you can grab Adobe Acrobat for 12.99/month. You absolutory don’t have to get both programs. I personally would start out with Photoshop and then decide if another program is right for you.
This is a super low cost, and if you can give up a few Starbucks runs each month, you’ll have more than enough for your design software program!
What does it cost to sell printables on Etsy?
Now let’s talk about Etsy fees. Whenever you list a printable on Etsy, it costs $0.20 to list it for 4 months. Can you think of a cheaper investment in a business than $0.20??! I can’t! I remember when I created some of my first printables. I thought that if I could sell a few printables for just $0.20 and a little bit of my time to design, that was totally worth it! Almost $100,000 later, girl… let me tell you! It was worth it!
In addition to the $0.20 listing fee, Etsy takes 6.5% of your sale price. This can seem like a lot, but think about it this way. If you sell a printable for $4.99, Etsy is going to take $0.32. I feel like that’s not such a big price to pay, right? And if you still think it seems unfair, think about the fees that Paypal, Stripe, and other payment providers take when you sell your items on your website. At the end of the day, it’s a small price to pay and a great way to at least get started selling printables.
What does it cost to NOT sell printables on Etsy?
Now that we’re finished talking about the costs of selling on Etsy, let’s talk about what it costs if you DON’T start. Let’s say, at a minimum, you can make an extra $200.00 per month selling printables on Etsy. If that’s the case, you are missing out on $2,400.00 a year! I mean, that’s not too shabby! In fact, I can think of plenty of things I would spend that extra $2,400.00. Can’t you?
The point is, if you’ve been thinking about starting to design and sell printables, how much longer are you going to wait? How much time is going to go by where you could be growing your shop slowly and increasing the amount coming in each month.
