If you’re a parent, you probably know the struggle: stacks of school papers, artwork, photos, and keepsakes piling up year after year. You want to save those memories, but figuring out how to do it in a way that’s organized, meaningful, and fun? That’s the tricky part. That’s why I created a DIY school memory book system that is not only simple and beautiful, but also realistic for busy parents. And today, I’m going to walk you through exactly how to set it up — plus give you a free printable memory book cover to help you get started!

Why I Ditched the School Memory Box for a Binder System For this DIY School Memory Book

You’ve probably seen those giant plastic bins people use as a school keepsake box. While they can work in theory, they usually end up overstuffed and disorganized — and let’s be honest, they rarely get looked at again.
Instead of a cluttered bin, I started using a binder system for school keepsakes, and it completely changed the game. My memory book now helps me:
- Easily organize kids’ school papers
- Keep track of milestones from kindergarten to 12th grade
- Actually enjoy flipping through memories with my daughter
- Create a personalized, custom school photo album that grows over time
What You Need to Start Your Own DIY School Memory Book

Creating a printable school memory book is easier than you think! You don’t need fancy supplies — just a few basics to get started. I’ve listed the things I used below, but remember, you can absolutely make this project your own! Feel free to search around for other items that fit your needs.
- A generic sturdy 3-ring binder or a custom binder (This binder is going to get pretty full over the years, so you might want to get one that’s at least 3 inches or bigger.)
- 8.5×11 sheet protector pages (These keep your child’s projects protected over the years.)
- Photo insert pages for smaller school photos, awards, and mementos (No hardcore scrapbooking needed!)
- Divider pages to organize by grade level
- Pocket pages for keepsakes (An optional idea to store miscellaneous collectables)
- Printable and editable memory book pages for kids

How to Organize Your Child’s School Keepsakes with a Binder
This isn’t your typical pre-made book. Traditional memory books come with fixed prompts that you may never use. My version is completely customizable — using editable Canva memory book templates that let you add your child’s personality and your creativity.

Here’s what you can include:
- Printable school memory pages to capture stats like height, favorite subjects, and friends
- Class photos and first and last day of school pages
- Room for essays, report cards, awards, and art projects
- Collages of school photos, field trips, and even summer vacations
- A “miscellaneous memories” section for sweet notes, certificates, and classroom snapshots

Add Beautiful Divider Tabs to your DIY School Memory Book to Keep It All Organized

One of my favorite ways to elevate this memory book is by adding custom divider pages that I found on Amazon. Not only do they keep everything in chronological order, but they also make it feel like a real school photo album you’ll actually use and enjoy.

These rainbow-themed divider labels from inside my DIY School Memory Book page bundle fit perfectly inside the divider pages. If you don’t like the rainbow theme, you can pick from several other divider labels that you can edit in Canva to match your child’s style or your preferred fonts and colors.

It’s a fun way to combine crafty mom ideas with real-life practicality.
How to Stay on Top of Your Memory Book All Year Long
I might know what you’re thinking—this sounds like a lot of work. But keeping up with your school keepsake binder is surprisingly manageable if you break it into small, doable chunks:
- As items come home: Insert projects, awards, and schoolwork into your binder using sheet protectors.
- Throughout the year: Keep a digital folder of school photos. Every once in a while, drop them into my Canva templates and print them out.
- At the end of each school year: Fill out the stats page, add your favorite snapshots, and print a collage page of memories.
Whether you’re just starting with kindergarten memory pages or catching up on middle school, it’s never too late to create something beautiful.
A Graduation Gift to Remember
When my daughter graduates, I plan to swap her current binder for a custom memory book binder with a personalized cover — something like a photo collage of every school year. (If you’re curious, I did the same thing with her DIY baby book, and it turned out so sweet.) Watch how I created that baby book here.
