Do You Enjoy Writing?
You might not be surprised to find out that I have always LOVED to write. In fact, I still have my very first journal (or should I say, diary – complete with a lock and key). I’ll never forget the first time someone told me I was a good writer. I was in fourth grade, and I had written a story about how we had to put my childhood dog down because she had gotten sick. (I distinctly remember being in the computer lab while writing this story and asking the teacher how to spell “diarrhea”. lol).
Long story short. I’ve loved to write and have always been fairly good at it. (Unlike other topics I barely passed in school like algebra, biology, and statistics.)
However, writing was never offered up to me as a “serious” way to earn an income. Nonetheless, I ended up getting a degree in Journalism, thinking I’d have a career in public relations.
Turns out writing newsletters and press releases about enterprise resource planning software will turn your love of writing into a huge borefest in about 2 seconds flat.
How My Blog Came To Be
Luckily, I realized that even if you hate what you do for your day job, you can do something on the side! That’s why, when I started my Etsy shop, I knew I wanted to incorporate a blog with it. After all, I was yearning for a little creative writing with all that corporate technology jargon I was dealing with in my day job.
When I first started the blog, I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to write about. I knew it just felt right. Do you have that feeling? If so, don’t let it go. Because for me, although I had originally planned on just writing about party decorations, it blossomed into so much more, as my business grew and changed. And it’s now become both a lucrative area of my business, and a way to help grow my printables business.
How a Blog Can Grow Your Printables Business
After I made the switch to printables, I started to realize the power of the combination of printables and a blog together.
First, I could spend so much more time blogging, since I wasn’t breaking my neck trying to crank out handmade products. That meant more content that I could monetize, more ways to connect with my audience, and more fun writing!
Next, I realized that I could grow my email list much more quickly by offering my printables as a freebie to get on my email list. Turns out that the whole, “Sign up for my free newsletter” doesn’t quite do the job. When you are a printables seller, you can easily give some of those printables away for free that you are ALSO selling on Etsy. It’s a easy win.
And lasty, by offering printables for free on your blog, you can easily see the kinds of printables people will pay you for. Because, let’s face it. If you’re offering a printable for free on your blog, but nobody wants it, you can bet they wouldn’t pay you for it either. That’s why offering these freebies on your website can also help you get a better understanding of WHAT printables you should be selling.
Is a Blog Right For Your Printables Business
You can see how a blog has helped me in my printables business. But you might be asking yourself if a blog right for you in your printables venture? I guess that depends on you. For me, it was a no brainer. Obviously, I love to write. But for you, it might not be as simple as that.
Remember that if you aren’t ready for a blog right now, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be one day. We all have different seasons in our lives and businesses.
However, if a blog feels like something you might want to do in the future, don’t throw it out just because you don’t have the time right now. Put it in your back pocket for later. Start ruminating on what you might blog about, what it would look like, and what your domain name might be.
Then, when the time comes, you’ll be ready!
