Creating your own DIY Party Decorations doesn’t have to be super complicated or expensive. Many people get anxiety around purchasing digital party decorations from an Etsy shop like mine, or my digital party selection right here on my website. They avoid purchasing these items because they’re scared they won’t be able to DIY items easily and cheaply, for example. However, once you see these tutorials on How to DIY Party Decorations, you’ll feel much more confident that you absolutely can create your own party decorations!

How to DIY Party Banners
Firstly, a party banner is a staple piece to all your decor, and one you’ll definitely want to add to your list of how to DIY party decorations. Weather your banner says “Happy Birthday Chase!” or “Chase is One!” – either way works! Just as long as everyone can see your DIY party banner at the center of your party in your party theme!
What Do I Need for a DIY Party Banner?
Here’s the supplies you’ll need for your DIY Banner:
- Ribbon (I prefer a ribbon that is 1/8 because it tends to hang better.)
- Scissors (Good old Kitchen Aid scissors are a staple piece in my craft room!) Click here to see my craft room!
- Small Hole Punch (I prefer the smaller version because it punches smaller holes than a regular hole puncher. But you could absolutely use your bigger one.)
- 8.5 x 11 Quality Paper
- A Digital Party Banner like, this peach party printable Happy Birthday Banner
Follow these instructions to create your do-it -yourself party banner:
- Print your digital banner on quality paper
- Cut the banner out
- Use the small hole punch to create the holes for your ribbon
- String your ribbon through the banner (starting from the back to the front)
- and hang!

How to DIY Cupcake Toppers
Secondly, creating DIY Cupcake Toppers sounds hard at first. However, they are actually extremely easy to make. In other words, it’s as easy as – cupcakes? Therefore, you won’t regret adding it to your repertoire of how to DIY party decorations.
Here’s the supplies you’ll need to create cupcake toppers at home:
- Scissors
- 8.5 x 11 Quality Paper
- Glue Gun and hot glue (It doesn’t matter what glue you have, as long as the glue is clear.)
- Lollipop Sticks
- Digital Cupcake Toppers, like these Editable Firefighter Party Cupcake Toppers
Follow these instructions to create your do it yourself cupcake toppers:
- Print your cupcake toppers on quality paper. (Quality paper is important! I talk all about it in my blog, The Best Paper for Digital Party Decorations)
- Cut them out with scissors. (I sometimes offer PNGs like these from my bohemian baby shower, so that you can cut them with your cutting machine instead of by hand.)
- Use about 1/4 of an inch of glue on one tip of the lollipop stick.
- Place your cupcake printable in the middle of the lollipop stick at the end.
- Repeat on the opposite side if you want your cupcake toppers to have a backing so you don’t see the excess glue.
- Stick in your cupcakes!
How to DIY Centerpiece Sticks
Thirdly, centerpiece sticks made with party circles are such a cute and inexpensive way to DIY party decorations on any budget! You can check out the full blog on how to create centerpiece sticks and how to decorate with them here.
Here’s the supplies you’ll need to create centerpiece sticks for your DIY Party Decorations:
- Scissors
- 8.5 x 11 Quality Paper
- Glue Gun and hot glue
- Wooden dowels
- Digital Party Circles, like these from my ball party decorations
Follow these instructions to create your do it yourself centerpiece sticks:
- Print your centerpiece sticks on quality paper.
- Cut them out with scissors.
- Put about 3 inches of glue on the wooden dowel starting at the top.
- Place your printable party circle in the top middle of the wooden dowel.
- Repeat on opposite side if you’d like them to have a backing.
Favor Tags for Your DIY Party Decorations
Next, creating favor tags as part of your DIY party decorations is one of my favorite things to do. Why? Because, for instance, it’s so fun to think of giving them away at the end of the party! Alternatively, I think they make for a great keepsake as well to remember the theme of your party.
Here’s the supplies you’ll need to create DIY Favor Tags at home:
- Scissors
- 8.5 x 11 Quality Paper
- Ribbon
- Small Hole Punch
- Digital Favor Tag Printables like these from my carousel party theme
Follow these instructions to create your do it yourself cupcake toppers:
- Print your favor rags on quality paper.
- Cut them out with scissors.
- Hole punch the favor tag.
- Cut a piece of ribbon about 6 inches long.
- Fold the ribbon in half and stick the folded part through your hole in the front of the tag and then loop it back through the ribbon to make a knot.
